From His Garage to Nationwide
Leonard Ritchey was natural artist working in the local theater painting
signs for upcoming events. In 1937 he decided to start his own business and
Ritchey Sign Company was born. In a one-room shop he hand lettered trucks
and painted signs. As the market grew, he bought more equipment and started
working with neon.
Most of the 13 children of Leonard and Emma Ritchey worked in their fathers
business, and several of their grandchildren. Still associated with the company are
Joseph A. Ritchey Sr. who started full time after graduation in 1955.
His brother, Patrick has been with the company full time since his graduation in
1968. Joseph Ritchey Jr. now serves as the Sales Manager and has two decades
Of experience in the industry.
As an ever-changing business, Leonard adapted by developing his own plastic
ovens, a vacuum system and a hydraulic press to form faces. He designed his
own table saw to trim plastic faces and a crane to install all of his signs.
In the 50's sales were approximately $60,000 annually and had grown to
well over a million a year. All these developments, with the help of his children
kept the company one of the most state of the art companies in the sign
In 2005 Ritchey Sign Company was purchased by Kessler Sign Company and became
Ritchey Advertising. Combining the facilities, experienced staff and equipment of both
companies has truly created “The Complete Sign Company.” We are capable of handling
any project large or small.
